Pet Turtles

by Paul Bryan

Turtles are fascinating creatures, and over the years have become a popular choice of pet amongst households, particularly those with kids. The craze really took off a couple of decades ago when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise hit our television and theatre screens, after which every kid in the Westernised world wanted their own 'hero in a half shell'.

Pet turtles may not be as cuddly as a pet cat or as much of a companion as a pet dog but they do make wonderful pets. However, the decision on whether or not to have a turtle as a pet should not be taken lightly, as these are not just toys for the kids to get the novelty value from and then neglect. They are living creatures that need to be looked after and cared for.

Remember that turtles have a very long lifespan, which means that they could be in your family not only throughout the years but throughout generations. You therefore need to make sure that you are in it for the long haul if you are getting a turtle. There are different types of turtles that are suitable as pets. Often it is easier to choose one that is easy to care for.

The most common pet turtles are box turtles, sliders, mud turtles, and painted turtles. These four are considered the easiest to look after and have therefore proven to be the most suitable and popular amongst those looking for one of these unusual yet delightful pets. It is important that you take time to consider the requirements of a turtle before you commit to bringing one into the household, as all too often people do this after they have bought a turtle, and it then ends up being neglected and has its lifespan cut short.

You will need to consider different things when you are looking at getting a pet turtle, such as its dietary requirements, its environmental needs, even its hibernation habits. You should bear in mind that you may need to spend money on special equipment for your turtle, such as a tank, and that you may also need to learn about how to look after the pet and create the right environment at different times of the year.

Anyone that is considering having a should make sure that they do their research, learn all about the care, environment, and treatment that a turtle needs, and exercise careful consideration before taking the plunge.
