3 Costly Pet Turtle Care Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

by Edward S Lake

Expert Author Edward S Lake

Mistake #1 - Taking Your Indoor Turtle Outdoors - Or Vice Versa

People can choose to either keep their turtle indoors or outdoors, but once the decision is made it should be adhered to.  Turtles are cold-blooded reptiles.  As such, they are very sensitive to sudden changes in their environment.  Taking a turtle from a warm indoor environment to a chilly outdoor environment suddenly can be a shock to their system. Any change of more than ten degrees can be detrimental to their health and well-being.  Also, taking an indoor turtle outdoors can expose them to bacteria, fungus or other environmental factors that they may not be used to.

Mistake #2 - Improper Setup of Your Pet Turtle's Enclosure

Your pet turtle's environment is very important to its well-being.  See my other articles for more information on the specifics of how to set up a proper space for your indoor or outdoor pet turtle.  Although there are great differences between the two environments, there are some rules that should apply to both.  For one, the enclosure should be made of non-edible materials.  Obviously, if you are keeping your pet in an aquarium, this should not be an issues.  However, make sure the outside environment is enclosed with plastic or metal or something else that the turtle cannot ingest.  Also, make sure the environment is clear of wood chips or other organic material that the turtle may eat but cannot digest.

 Mistake #3 - Improper Lighting

Turtles require proper lighting for good health.  For your outdoor turtle, this is not a problem.  For your indoor turtle, it is important to make sure they receive natural sunlight or a sufficient substitute.  Turtles need UVB light for proper bone growth and for healthy shells and skin.  If your turtle doesn't get sufficient natural sunlight, you can find specially made lighting at your pet store that will suffice.

There is plenty of additional information available on proper pet turtle care in my other articles.  For a small fee, there are also comprehensive guides that should answer all of your questions on how to care for your properly.

Did you find those tips on care useful? I've been a turtle lover since my childhood and I've written other resources you can find on how to care for your turtle. You can click on the lens above.
