Breeding and Caring for Pet Turtles

by G. Smitty

If you decide to keep pet turtles, there are a lot of things you need to know about them. It is important to make sure that they are fed and watered properly. The tank needs to be kept clean and free of anything that may be harmful to them. In general turtles will be fairly easy to feed. They can eat insects when they are in the wild, but this may be hard to provide for pets. They like lettuce and some other food that humans eat, but this does not mean that they can just be given leftovers. They can be quite an expensive pet food wise, as most of their food will have to be purchased from pet stores.

Food sticks are fairly easy to find and these will keep the turtle healthy, but they need more than that. Bits of fruit and vegetables can be added to the stick and this will give them a healthy and balanced diet. When the turtles have been fed, it is best to check the tank. Any bits of food that have not been eaten could go moldy and this can be damaging to the pet if they try to eat it at a later date. There are physical signs that the turtle is not getting a healthy diet. This can be lack of energy and interest, plus milky eyes. Pet turtles will enjoy live fish occasionally and hunting for them once they are in the tank will be like being back in the wild. It can also be entertaining for children to watch how they act.

However clean you manage to keep the tank it is vital that there is always clean water available. The water that the turtles live in will have urine in it and it will not be right if they drink that. As they age there is the need to make sure that they do not eat too much protein.

Breeding turtles in captivity may not be as easy as you would imagine. They do not always adapt well and if it is not possible to make them hibernate it is very unlikely to happen. Turtles are most ready to mate when they come out of hibernation and this is usually around May. Although you may not be an expert with turtles it is important to make sure that fit and health y turtles are used to mate. Any weaknesses in the adults could be replicated in the offspring.

If they breed successfully it will be necessary to provide soil for the female to bury the eggs. This should be quite deep and there is no need to worry about them being under too much soil. As this process will have to take place out of doors, it is important to ensure that other animals that may damage the eggs cannot reach the area. After 90 days the eggs should hatch and it is now you need to protect the baby turtles. Regardless of whether or not they will spend most of their lives outdoors, it is sensible to let pet turtles live indoors for the first year of their lives.
